Earthquake Update: Continuing from home page...
The Saint Rock Advisory Board is soliciting funds to help the residents of Saint Rock deal with the immediate health and welfare issues and to provide support during the rebuilding period. Please utilize the “Make a Donation” link on this site or send donation to the Saint Rock Haiti Foundation, 108 Central Avenue, Hull MA 02045. Please indicate that your donation should be used for earthquake relief. The Haitian people need your support now more than ever!
The Foundation and Clinic started it’s sixth year in November of 2007. What started as a simple clinic for the people of Saint Rock is now a health clinic for all ten sections in the mountain area of Dufresnay. Here are some updates on the clinic and programs that the foundation is involved in: The ClinicOur current medical staffing is a full time nurse, a full time nurse’s aide, a doctor two days a week and a dentist three days a week. The clinic also has a lab technician operating the laboratory three days a week. We are in the process of working with the Haitian Board of Health to have an intern on site five days a week. We have close to 6,000 patients registered at the clinic. Our nurses aide, Ernante Horace has been with the clinic since the beginning and keeps accurate records of patient visits. We see an average of 165 people a month at the clinic and the dentist sees an average of 170 people every month. The patients pay what they can afford. The money from the patient visits is used to purchase medications for the clinic and anesthesia for the dentist. Any extra money is used for the upkeep of the clinic. Rock Deline is the Clinic Director and works very hard to keep things running smoothly. Our custodian, Odelian, also acts as security staying at the clinic every night. We have a secretary, who works with the dentist, and Gladys, who keeps the place clean and cooks when groups are visiting.Foundation FundraisingOur monthly donor club started as the $10 a month club and now has about 170 members. The monthly donor club gives us about $1700; our staff costs run about $2200 a month leaving a shortfall of around $500. Anybody wishing to join the donor club can help with a monthly donation of $10, $15, $20, or whatever is comfortable. The difference between the monthly donor receipts and expenses is made up with various fundraising activities. Again thank you to all who have continued to support this important revenue source for the clinic. This year we have been concentrating on a much needed four-wheel drive vehicle. This vehicle will be used to transport patients, staff, visitors and supplies up and down the mountain. In November we had two emergencies while a medical outreach group was there. One person who needed surgery was carried down the mountain in the rocking chair, the other was an infant girl whose mother died and the baby was dehydrated. We were fortunate because at that time there was a rented vehicle at the clinic and we were able to drive the infant to the hospital. She is now thriving. The campaign for the vehicle is going well and soon we hope to have enough to purchase this much needed vehicle. Medical Outreach TripsThe number of people participating in medical outreach trips has continued to grow. These trips are important in not only providing necessary medical services but also in building awareness and fundraising for the clinic. Anybody wishing to go and experience one of these trips can for the cost of airfare plus $200 for room, board, and transportation while in Haiti. This is a very worthwhile experience. Anyone not in the health care field will work with those in the health care field, or help with various projects at the clinic. Each trip we also spend a few hours at Mother Theresa’s orphanage with the infants and help at feeding time. Anyone interested in going on one of the medical outreach trips should contact Ralph at 781-925-6746 for more details and times. |
